It is no secret that dogs are the human kind’s best friend. We love our dogs and treat them like members of our own family. Which is why if they are sick, hurting, or simply not feeling the best, we want to go above and beyond to make sure they’re well taken care of.
CBD has been rising in popularity on the market, and not just for humans, but for our furry companions, too. However, before you pick up CBD from your favorite weed dispensary in Long Beach, it’s important to ask a few questions.
Is CBD Safe?
In general, the answer to this question is ‘yes’, CBD is safe. However, there are a few important things to note. First, there are typically special CBD products for dogs that are different from what humans take because of the dosage. Talk to your veterinarian and our helpful staff here at From The Earth to see what might work best for your pup.
Second, if your dog is taking other medications, it is absolutely imperative to speak to your vet before adding CBD to your dog’s health regiment. This is because CBD can inhibit a chemical in the body called cytochrome P450, and it is what’s responsible for metabolizing most drugs. If a drug’s efficiency is dependent on being metabolized, CBD could make it less effective.
Does It Work?
While research is still ongoing, there have been over 23,000 published papers in regards to CBD and its effect on the body. So far, the results have been encouraging when looking at arthritic pain, itchiness, anxiety, and even cancer.
- Arthritis: Of the studies conducted on CBD and arthritis pain in dogs, all have yielded positive results. According to a study conducted by the Cornell University School of Veterinary Medicine, dogs with arthritis who were given CBD at a rate of 4.4 mg per pound twice daily showed a significant improvement in their symptoms, plus an overall better quality of life.
- Itchiness: If your canine companion has problems with chronic itchiness, there may be a solution! According to several studies conducted, CBD has been shown to drastically decrease the itchiness of skin in dogs, working to reduce inflammation.
- Cancer: While this may seem like a lofty claim, according to a research done by the University of Cornell, when CBD is used in tandem with chemotherapy and other treatments, it can actually work to reduce cancer cells. Cannabinoids are reported to induce cancer-cell death and prevent metastasis.
- Behavior: Does your pup struggle with behavior issues, such an anxiety? This is one of the main reasons that pet owners turn to CBD, especially during times of excessive loud noises, such as the Fourth of July holiday or if you are having a lot of people over for parties or gatherings. Talk to your veterinarian about giving your dog CBD prior to events such as these.
